Robert M. Orfaly, MD, FRCS(C), named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Councilors

LAS VEGAS (March 15, 2019)––Portland, Oregon orthopaedic surgeon, Robert M. Orfaly, MD, FRCS(C), became chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Councilors (BOC) today at the organization’s 2019 Annual Meeting.

The BOC consists of more than 100 members elected by state and regional orthopaedic societies including Puerto Rico, the U.S. military, Canada and four regional societies. The BOC serves as an advisory body to the AAOS Board of Directors, Councils, Cabinet and Committees. The BOC also manages the Academy’s relations with state and regional orthopaedic societies and conducts a wide range of programs to strengthen and support the societies.

Dr. Orfaly is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at Oregon Health and Science University. His areas of interest include shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff disorders, upper extremity trauma, shoulder biomechanics, and orthopaedic implant design. Dr. Orfaly received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of British Columbia, followed by fellowships in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of British Columbia and shoulder surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Dr. Orfaly also assumes chair of the AAOS Membership and Leadership Development Committee this year. He was elected to the position of Board of Councilors Secretary two years ago and has been an active volunteer with the Academy for more than a decade. He served on the Communications Cabinet and participated in the Leadership Fellows Program and was a previous member of the Shoulder and Elbow Evaluation Committee and the Trauma Program Committee. Additionally, he was the recipient of the AAOS Distinguished Volunteer Service Awards in 2010 and 2013.

Dr. Orfaly is a past-president of the Oregon Medical Association and the Oregon Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and served as a member of the American Medical Association Orthopaedic Section Executive Committee.
