Wayne A. Johnson, MD, FAAOS, FACS, named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Board of Councilors
ROSEMONT, Ill. (March 15, 2021)—Oklahoma orthopaedic surgeon Wayne A. Johnson, MD, FAAOS, FAC, was named chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Board of Councilors (BOC).
The BOC consists of more than 100 members elected by state and regional orthopaedic societies including Puerto Rico, the U.S. military, Canada and four regional societies. The BOC serves as an advisory body to the AAOS Board of Directors. The BOC also manages the Academy’s relations with state and regional orthopaedic societies and conducts a wide range of programs to strengthen and support the societies.
Dr. Johnson specializes in general orthopaedic surgery with a subspecialty interest in sports medicine & arthroscopy. He is currently an assistant clinical professor of the University of Oklahoma Family Medicine Residency Program and the Oklahoma State Family Medicine Residency.
Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Colorado, where he served as the chief resident of his residency program and the Denver Children’s Hospital. He also has completed a mini- postgraduate fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery (2002) at the University of Miami’s, Ryder Trauma Center. Dr Johnson is a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
A former U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Johnson has completed 21 years of combined service in the United States Army (1980-1991: U.S. Army Reserves, 1991-2003: U.S. Army Active Duty). He served as the president of the Oklahoma State Orthopaedic Society for six years, former president and vice-president of the Mid-Central States Orthopaedic Society, Inc., and the Cameron University Foundation board of directors for eight years where he was president. He has served as an oral board examiner and written board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).
Dr. Johnson has a passion for volunteering and giving back to his profession. His leadership roles in the Lawton, Oka., medical community include the Southwestern Medical Center (Lawton, Oka.) chief of surgery, chairman of the board of the Ambulatory Surgical Center Board, chief of orthopaedics, and the Hospital Physicians Leadership Group. He has been a board member for the Great Plains Technology Center Biomedical Sciences Committee and a Medical School Admissions Committee member for the University of Oklahoma Medical School.
Prior to his appointment as chair of the BOC, Dr. Johnson served on the AAOS’ Coding, Coverage and Reimbursement Committee, the Diversity Advisory Board, former Communications Cabinet, and in his BOC role, served on the Research and Quality Council, Education Council and the Orthopaedic PAC. He also served on the editorial board for AAOS Now.
