American Joint Replacement Registry 2023 Supplement Report Preview

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 12, 2024)—The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Registry Program released the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) 2023 Annual Report Supplement during the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The report offers actionable information to guide physician and patient decision making to improve care.

Overview
In collaboration with the Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP), the AJRR recently investigated the consistency of hip and knee arthroplasty device-specific survivorship results compared to the National Joint Registry (NJR) for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. Investigation of representativeness of patient/procedural data in AJRR has been conducted in prior publications, but this is the first device-specific comparison of survivorship against an international registry.

Because many new devices in the future will first be used in the U.S., AJRR data for ODEP ratings is particularly important. ODEP confirmed that AJRR and NJR performance trends and survivorship were similar across hip and knee arthroplasty devices with greatest consistency in the all-age and age ≥65 cohorts. The results outline strong implications for global improvement in patient safety including evaluation of new devices in the U.S. market which may also facilitate earlier ODEP certification and use internationally.

Why It Matters
“The 2023 AJRR Supplement Report highlights two very important and practical areas where the AJRR data can make an impact on the world of hip and knee arthroplasty,” said James A. Browne, MD, FAAOS, chair of the AJRR Publications Subcommittee and editor of AJRR Publications. “First, the validation of the AJRR data with ODEP data raises the potential that AJRR data could be used for regulatory submissions. Secondly, the data showed that collared stems were associated with reduced fracture risk when compared to collarless implants and may even rival cemented stems in certain patient cohorts.”
