Andrew H. Schmidt, MD, FAAOS, named chair American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Education Council

CHICAGO (March 24, 2022)—Andrew H. Schmidt, MD, FAAOS, a Minneapolis orthopaedic surgeon, is the new chair of the Education Council for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He will assume the new position following the AAOS 2022 Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 22-26, 2022.

The AAOS Education Council provides oversight and decision-making for the Academy’s education portfolio, which is developed in accordance with essential policies and standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

A professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Dr. Schmidt has chaired the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hennepin Healthcare since 2014. On a national and global level, he has advanced faculty and student education that helped shape clinical practices.

Dr. Schmidt’s clinical expertise focuses on musculoskeletal trauma and adult reconstruction surgery. His research centers on acute compartment syndrome, prevention of musculoskeletal infection, peri-prosthetic fractures, and hip fractures. His scientific findings have been published in international journals, and he has lectured throughout the world.

Dr. Schmidt has been active in establishing standards and educational programming for the maintenance of certification for orthopaedic surgeons to learn and improve throughout their careers. He has held numerous leadership roles with AAOS committees during his more than 20 years of volunteering for the organization, including as a member of the Board of Councilors and most recently chair of the Annual Meeting Committee. Dr. Schmidt is past president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (2013-14) and has co-chaired the former Extremities War Injuries Symposium of which AAOS was a founding organization.

Dedicated to advancing orthopaedic science, he also serves as a peer reviewer for several orthopaedic journals including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Journal of Knee Surgery, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Research. He is deputy editor for the OTA International Journal.

Dr. Schmidt holds a medical degree from University of California, San Diego, and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from University of Colorado, Boulder. He completed residency and internship at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.
