Armando F. Vidal, MD, FAAOS, Named Chair of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Board of Specialty Societies

LAS VEGAS (March 9, 2023)—Colorado surgeon Armando F. Vidal, MD, FAAOS, was named chair of the Board of Specialty Societies (BOS) for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He will assume the position following the AAOS 2023 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas this week.

Dr. Vidal was head team physician for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the University of Denver’s national champion hockey team before he became attending surgeon at The Steadman Clinic, an elite athlete treatment center in Vail, Colorado. He is also associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His expertise in complex knee reconstruction, shoulder surgery and sports medicine also extends to pediatric patients where he previously served as the surgical director of sports medicine for Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Prior to his position as chair of the BOS, Dr. Vidal served as secretary and chair-elect for the BOS and served on the AAOS’ Sports Medicine Program Committee for a decade.

Dr. Vidal has authored more than 180 journal articles, book chapters, commentaries and poster presentations with the aim of improving orthopaedic care in adult and pediatric athletes. He was recognized by the Multicenter Orthopedics Outcome Network (MOON) and Multicenter ACL Revision Study (MARS) groups for outstanding shoulder, knee and anterior cruciate ligament research in surgical repair and rehabilitation.

He holds a medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine, completed residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The purpose of the BOS is to facilitate communications between musculoskeletal specialty societies and the AAOS, serve as an advisory body to the AAOS Board of Directors on various matters, comment on AAOS resolutions and proposed bylaws amendments, and foster unity and collaborative initiatives.
